What is a Read-A-Thon?

A Read-A-Thon is a fundraiser for our shelter and a challenge to young readers. It is a fun way to encourage children to exercise their reading skills and practice kindness by reading to their pets and help raise money for homeless animals.

How does it work?

Children will ask friends and family for penny pledges for every page they read to an animal or from a book about animals. When the Read-A-Thon is over, add up the total number of pages from your reading log so you can collect the pledges.  We will provide a sponsor sheet, reading log and a container to collect the pennies in.

Who can Participate?

Anyone can!  There is no age limit to reading or to raising money for our shelter animals!

If you are a teacher and you would like your school or class to participate, please let us know so we can come to the school with a pug or two and explain the challenge.  We can even offer a PUG POPCORN PARTY as a reward to the class that raises the most money!

If you are a club leader and would like to offer this challenge to your members, please let us know, we would love to get you set up and can also offer a PUG POPCORN PARTY at the end!

If you are a parent and you would like to teach your child the value of giving back to their community while encouraging them to read, please let us know, we can get you every thing you need to get started.

Why Pennies?

It is because everyone can afford a penny and that means every child can participate. We never charge for any of the educational services we offer to schools because we know how important it is to teach children to be kind and be responsible pet owners. Our Read-A-Thon is a great way to not only encourage kids to read, but help fund the programs we offer to any school, group or organation that would like to participate both at the shelter or when we are asked to visit their classrooms.
